Community Garden

The Community Garden

The West Ardnamurchan Community Garden (the Garden) is a community-led project overseen by a subcommittee of the WACDC. Established in 2010 with support from the Climate Challenge Fund, the Garden was created to reduce food miles in the area, encourage local food growing using organic principles, and provide a shared community space where people could come together through volunteering, learning and social activities.

The Garden has provided an opportunity for local residents to grow food, develop practical skills and strengthen community connections through collective activity.

How it runs

The Garden has been strategically managed by a small committee responsible for overall direction, decision-making and stewardship of the Garden’s physical assets, including the polytunnel, shed, tools and other resources.

The Committee appoints community gardeners who take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Garden, including operational decisions, planting plans, growing activities and practical work on site. This model has enabled volunteers to take an active role while ensuring the project has clear oversight and coordination.

Funding and Resourcing

The West Ardnamurchan Community Garden was established in 2010 through funding from the Climate Challenge Fund. Since then, the project has been supported through community involvement, volunteer contributions and income generated from the sale of produce outside the main growing season.

Following its first phase, the community garden project is continuing into a new chapter with plans to relocate to a new site within Kilchoan village and develop a new delivery model that reflects the changing needs and opportunities of the community.

The next phase will build on the Garden’s achievements, maintaining its focus on sustainable food growing, community participation and creating opportunities for people to connect through shared activities.
