The Community Minibus
The Kilchoan Community Minibus provides a sustainable and responsive transport service for the West Ardnamurchan community. It was established to improve local connectivity and support access to activities, services and opportunities, with a particular focus on supporting Kilchoan Primary School.
The minibus provides a valuable shared resource for children, families, community groups and residents, helping to overcome transport challenges in a rural area.
How it runs
The operation and upkeep of the Community Minibus are overseen by a subcommittee of the Development Company, which is responsible for ensuring the vehicle remains available, safe and suitable for community use.
Kilchoan Primary School manages the booking system, coordinating use of the minibus for school activities and other community requirements. The vehicle is currently housed at the MOWI fish farm premises while awaiting the construction of a dedicated garage by Ardnamurchan Estate.
A team of trained volunteer drivers supports the service, enabling the minibus to be used flexibly by a range of local groups and organisations.
Funding and Resourcing
TThe Community Minibus was purchased in 2018 following a successful fundraising partnership between WACDC and the Parent Council of Kilchoan Primary School. Funding was secured through successful grant applications to the Big Lottery Awards for All, the Robertson Trust and the Hugh Fraser Foundation.
WACDC also secured a Section 19 Permit to enable the minibus to operate as a community transport service. In 2018, MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) training was organised for 13 volunteer drivers, with further driver training updates funded by WACDC in 2023 to maintain skills and support safe operation.
In addition to its regular use by Kilchoan Primary School, the minibus has become a valued community asset, supporting outings, events and activities organised by a range of local groups. Its continued operation relies on volunteer involvement, community coordination and ongoing support to maintain this important transport service.
